SEWERS (41)

Warsaw's underground sewer system enabled the insurgents to move between isolated city districts. It made it possible to evacuate 5,300 soldiers from the Old Town to City Centre. A photographer Joachim Joachimczyk took a series of photos showing the defenders of the Old Town exiting the sewers in Warecka Street. The author not only captured the moment of the actual exit from the sewers, but also showed the insurgents resting, eating and reforming their units.  Another photographer, Marian Grabski, showed soldiers getting out of a sewer manhole in Ujazdowskie Avenue. A noteworthy photograph by Sabina Żdżarska shows four so-called "sewer rats", i.e. guides who assisted the insurgents and civilians in the extremely difficult passage through the underground communication routes.
