Photograph taken during the German occupation in Warsaw. City Centre South. 18 Mokotowska Street.
Władysław Martyka "Biskup" was born on 27 June 1914. Beginning in March 1940, he was actively involved in the underground movement in District III "Wola" of the Home Army's Warsaw Region. During the Rising, he joined the III Group "Konrad" in the Powiśle district. Martyka was killed on the first day of the fighting near the building of the Social Insurance Company at Smulikowskiego Street.
The collection of Władysław Martyka's photographs includes around 400 negatives showing Warsaw under the German occupation. Martyka photographed his friends and family in parks, squares and streets of Warsaw, creating a portrait of the occupied city. The stigma of war, seen in the damage left by the fighting in September 1939 and the presence of German troops, are mitigated by what appears to be normal life.
