„Erinnerungen” Album

„Erinnerungen” Album (191)

An album of an unknown Luftwaffe pilot includes 192 black-and-white photographs taken during World War II. The collection starts with a propaganda picture of a German parade in Warsaw and two portraits of the album’s author. A substantial part of the album is comprised of photos showing the damage that Warsaw sustained as a result of artillery fire and air raids during the siege in September 1939. Further are genre scenes taken during strolls in the city, including images of street markets, graves of German soldiers, and men at work. A subsequent group of photos shows men of Jewish descent – these were taken probably in a town in south-eastern Poland. Further pages show combat action that took place in the September 1939 campaign around the cities of Rzeszów, Jarosław and Sanok. Finally, there is a set of images of Warsaw, including the Okęcie airfield occupied by the Luftwaffe, and several pictures taken during the author’s trip to Sassnitz in the Rügen island and the centre of Greifswald, Mecklenburg.
